Dr Charles Chan

Director & Consultant Psychiatrist

Qualifications

Dr Charles Chan graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine from the University of New South Wales in 2005. He trained in psychiatry at Concord Hospital and Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, and completed psychiatry specialist training through the Royal Australian & New Zealand College of Psychiatry (RANZCP) in 2014. He also graduated with a Master of Psychiatry. He has also completed the advanced certificate of Forensic Psychiatry through the RANZCP.

Working experience

Dr Charles Chan has over fifteen years of experience working in psychiatry. He has previously worked as a consultant psychiatrist in the public sector as a staff specialist psychiatrist with the NSW Justice Health. He has also worked extensively as a VMO Psychiatrist at St John of God Richmond Hospital and St John of God Burwood Hospital from 2014-2021. Dr Chan has also worked as a Consultant Research Psychiatrist at Brain and Mind Research Institute focusing on mood and sleep disorder. Over the years, Dr Chan has been involved in teaching medical students at the University of Sydney.

Membership and Affiliations

Dr Charles Chan is a fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP).

He is a member of Australian ADHD Professional Association (AADPA). AADPA is an independent, not-for-profit organisation with a diverse membership of inter-disciplinary professionals across Australia and New Zealand. It is committed to working towards enhanced lifetime outcomes for individuals with ADHD and their families.

He is a member of the MED Blackdog CARE Network, with focus in optimising treatment options using TMS and esketamine treatment.

Dr Chan was a committee member of the Medical Association Committee at St John of God Burwood Hospital; he was also a committee member of the Transmagnetic Stimulation (TMS) Committee at St John of God Burwood Hospital.

Special interest

Dr Chan has developed expertise in the assessment and management of neurodevelopmental disorders including ADHD and Autistic Spectrum Disorder. He is particularly interested in using a holistic approach in optimising patients’ functional outcome. He is a regular invited speaker in education of ADHD to professionals and to the general public. He has completed comprehensive training in assessment and management of Autistic Spectrum Disorder (including ADOS-2 and ADI-R).

Dr Chan also has a special interest in the assessment and management of mood and anxiety disorders and post traumatic stress disorder. He has completed the RANZCP-endorsed TransMagnetic Stimulation (TMS) accredited training, and was part of the TMS Committee at St John of God Burwood Hospital. He is a member of the MED Blackdog CARE Network, with focus in optimising treatment options using TMS and esketamine treatment.

Dr Charles Chan is available on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. He is fluent in English, Cantonese and Mandarin.
