Dr Sophia Franks

Qualifications
Dr Sophia Franks graduated with a combined Master of Clinical Psychology and Doctor of Philosophy degree from Australian Catholic University, Melbourne. She trained in child and adolescent psychiatry (Austin Health), parent-infant mental health (University of Melbourne), and completed her PhD in the department of anaesthesia and pain (Royal Children’s Hospital). During this time, she was appointed a senior psychology position and was awarded a Murdoch Institute grant for her research which was published in the International Association for the Study of Pain.
Working Experience
Dr Franks worked as the senior psychologist in the psychiatry department at the Mercy Hospital for Women, working with high-risk infants and children, antenatally and postnatally. She has extensive experience in working with children and families and in adult psychotherapy. She has been in private practice since 2006, working collaboratively with adult, child and adolescent psychiatrists and paediatricians. Over the years, Dr Franks has taught and trained Australian Catholic University students. She has clinically supervised masters students at Victoria University during their training and supported them throughout their professional careers in private practice.

Special Interest and Language
Dr Franks takes an empathic and research-based approach to providing psychological care. She has a special interest in working with children, parents, and families, and in perinatal psychiatry. Dr Franks is trained in several therapeutic treatment modalities and provides both insight-oriented and developmental and relational approaches. She provides practical strategies, assisting patients to form adaptive ways of regulating emotions and developing a robust sense of self and secure attachments.
